Buffy and Spike Quotes

SPIKE: Nice work, love.
BUFFY:
Who are you?
SPIKE:
You'll find out on Saturday.
BUFFY:
What happens on Saturday?
SPIKE:
I kill you. (Ep. 2.03, "School Hard")

BUFFY: What are you doing here? Five words or less.
SPIKE: (counting the words on his fingers) Out ... for ... a ... walk ... bitch.
BUFFY: Out for a walk at night by my house. No one has time for this, William.
SPIKE: On your merry way, then. You know, contrary to one's self-involved world-view, your house happens to be directly between parts ... and ... other parts of this town. And I would pass by in the day, but I feel I'm outgrowing my whole 'burst into flame' phase.
BUFFY: Fine. Keep going, I cut you a break.
SPIKE: Oh, yeah. Okay, let me guess ... you won't kill me? Wooo ... the whole crowd-pleasing threats-and-swagger routine. How stunningly original. You know, I'm just passing through. Satisfied? You know, I really hope so, because god knows you need some satisfaction in life besides shagging Captain Cardboard, and I never really liked you anyway and ... and ... you have stupid hair. (Ep. 5.05, "No Place Like Home")

"(to Buffy, who is in bed) I wouldn't be here if I didn't have a good reason. As usual, I'm here to help you, and I ... are you naked under there?" (Ep. 5.10, "Into the Woods")

BUFFY: What are you doing?
SPIKE: (looks at the door he just opened for her) I, I was ... (scoffs) I wasn't thinking.
BUFFY: What is this?
SPIKE: Oh, come ... don't get your knickers twisted, I was ...
BUFFY: What ... is this? The late-night stakeout, the bogus suspects, the flask? Is this a date?
SPIKE: (loudly) A d- Please! (pretending to be amused) A date? You are completely off your bird! I mean - (quietly) Do you want it to be? (Ep. 5.14, "Crush")

SPIKE: It's not so unusual. Two people ... in the workplace ... feelings develop.
BUFFY: No! No, no, feelings do not develop. No feelings.
SPIKE: You can't deny it. There's something between us.
BUFFY: Loathing. Disgust.
SPIKE: Heat. Desire.
BUFFY: Please! Spike, you're a vampire.
SPIKE: Angel was a vampire.
BUFFY: Angel was good!
SPIKE: And I can be, too. I've changed, Buffy.
BUFFY: What, that chip in your head? That's not change. Tha-that's just ... holding you back. You're like a serial killer in prison!
SPIKE: Women marry 'em all the time!
BUFFY: (makes a disgusted noise)
SPIKE: But I'm not ... like that. Something's happening to me. I can't stop thinking about you.
BUFFY: (makes a disbelieving noise)
SPIKE: And if that means turning my back on the whole evil thing ...
BUFFY: You don't know what you mean! You don't know what feelings are!
SPIKE: (offended) I damn well do! I lie awake every night!
BUFFY: You sleep during the day!
SPIKE: Yeah, but ... You're missing the point. This is real here. I love ...
BUFFY: (interrupting hurriedly) Don't! Don't say it. I'm going.
SPIKE: Oh, come on, we need to talk ...
BUFFY: We don't need to do anything! Okay, there is no 'we'! Understand? (Ep. 5.14, "Crush")

CrushSPIKE: (to Buffy, desperate) No, look at me! I ... love you. You're all I bloody think about. Dream about. You're in my gut ... my throat ... I'm drowning in you, Summers. I'm drowning in you. (to Drusilla, annoyed) I can do without the laugh track, Dru.
DRUSILLA: But it's so funny. I knew ... before you did. I knew you loved the Slayer. The pixies in my head whispered it to me.
SPIKE: (to Buffy) You can't tell me that there isn't anything there between you and me. I know you feel something.
BUFFY: It's called revulsion. And whatever you think you're feeling, it's not love. You can't love without a soul.
DRUSILLA: Oh, we can, you know. We can love quite well, if not wisely. (Ep. 5.14, "Crush")

"We have something, Buffy. It's not pretty, but it's real, and there's nothing either one of us can do about it. Like it or not, I'm in your life ... you can't just shut me out." (Ep. 5.14, "Crush")

"(to Buffy) If you want me to leave, you can put your hands on my hot, tight little body and make me." (Ep. 5.15, "I Was Made to Love You")

Spike and BotBuffyBot: You're evil.
SPIKE: And that excites you?
BuffyBot: It excites me. It terrifies me. I try so hard to resist you, and I can't.
SPIKE: Yeah?
BuffyBot: Darn your sinister attraction!
SPIKE: You afraid of me?
BuffyBot: (smiling blithely) Yes.
SPIKE: You know I can't bite you.
BuffyBot: I think you can. I think you can if I let you. And I want to let you. I want you to bite me and devour me until there's no more.
SPIKE: Like this?
BUFFY: Oh Spike, devour me!
SPIKE: Alright!
BUFFY: Spike, I can't help myself. I love you.
SPIKE: You're mine, Buffy.
BuffyBot: Should I start this program over?
SPIKE: (quickly) Shhh, no programs, don't use that word. Just be Buffy. (Ep. 5.18, "Intervention")

BUFFY: (pretending to be BuffyBot) Why did you let that Glory hurt you?
SPIKE: She wanted to know who the key was.
BUFFY: (as BuffyBot, enthusiastically) Well, I can tell her and then you won't ...
KissSPIKE: No! (cough) you can't ever! Glory never finds out.
BUFFY: (as BuffyBot) Why?
SPIKE: Because Buffy ... the other, not-so-pleasant Buffy ... anything happened to Dawn, it'd destroy her. I couldn't live, her being in that much pain. I'd let Glory kill me first. Nearly bloody did.
(Buffy kisses him gently on the lips. Spike gets it.)
SPIKE: And my robot?
BUFFY: The robot is gone. The robot was gross and obscene.
SPIKE: It wasn't supposed ...
BUFFY: (interrupts) Don't! That thing ... it wasn't even real. (long pause) What you did, for me and Dawn ... that was real. I won't forget it. (Ep. 5.18, "Intervention")

SPIKE: You ... so you're saying that a ... powerful and mightily pissed-off witch was planning on going and spilling herself a few pints of god-blood until you ... what?... explained?
BUFFY: You think she ... ? No! I told Willow it would be like suicide.
SPIKE: I'd do it. Right person ... person I loved. I'd do it. (Ep. 5.19, "Tough Love")

Holding Hands

BUFFY: How long was I gone?
SPIKE: Hundred forty-seven days yesterday. Uh ... hundred forty-eight today. 'Cept today doesn't count, (smiles slightly) does it? (gently) How long was it for you ... where you were?
BUFFY: (quietly) Longer. (Spike nods understandingly) (Ep. 6.03, "After Life")

"Uh ... I do remember what I said. The promise. To protect her. ... If I'd'a done that ... even if I didn't make it ... you wouldn't've had to jump. But I want you to know ... I did save you. Not when it counted, of course, but ... after that. Every night after that. I'd see it all again ... do something different. Faster or more clever, you know? Dozens of times, lots of different ways ... (softly) Every night I save you." (Ep. 6.03, "After Life")

BUFFY: I just, I feel like I'm spending all of my time trying to be okay, so they don't worry. It's exhausting. And then, I ...
SPIKE: And that makes 'em worry even more. (she nods) You want me to take them out? Give me a hell of a headache, but I could probably thin the herd a little. (she smiles slightly) Knew I could get a grin.
BUFFY: Why are you always around when I'm miserable?
SPIKE: 'Cause that's when you're alone, I reckon. I'm not one for crowds myself these days.
BUFFY: Me neither.
SPIKE: (friendly smile) That works out nicely then. (Ep. 6.04, "Flooded")

SPIKE: What's wrong, luv?
BUFFY: (very drunkenly struggling with her jacket) What's wrong?! You were gonna help me! You, you were gonna ... beat heads and, and ... and fix my life! But you're completely lame! Tonight sucks! And, and look at me! Look at, look at stupid Buffy! Too dumb for college, and, and, and freak Buffy, too strong for construction work. And, and my job at the magic shop? I was bored to tears even before the hour that wouldn't end! And the only person I can even stand to be around is a ... neutered vampire who cheats at kitten poker!
SPIKE: (embarrassed) Oh, you saw the cheating, did you?
BUFFY: Also? I think you're drunk. (Ep. 6.05, "Life Serial")

SPIKE: (disappointed) Oh. So that's all. You've just come to pump me for information.
BUFFY: What else would I wanna pump you for? (cringes) I really just said that, didn't I? (Ep. 6.07, "Once More, With Feeling")

Once More With FeelingSPIKE (section from his song):
I know I should go ...
But I follow you like a man possessed.
There's a traitor here beneath my breast
And it hurts me more than you've ever guessed.
If my heart could beat, it would break my chest ...
But I can see you're unimpressed,
So leave me be ...

And let me rest in peace ...
Let me get some sleep ...
Let me take my love and bury it
In a hole six foot deep.
I can lay my body down,
But I can't find my sweet release ...
So let me rest in peace.
Why won't you
Let me rest in peace? (Ep. 6.07, "Once More, With Feeling")

BUFFY: Spike, if you're dragging this out ...
SPIKE: What, so I can linger near your precious self? Get a grip.
BUFFY: Like you've never drawn things out before.
SPIKE: Maybe, but we've been through this, haven't we? Things have changed.
BUFFY: Will you quit that? The only thing that's different is that I'm disgusted with myself. That's the power of your charms. Last night ... was the most perverse ... degrading experience of my life.
SPIKE: (smiles fondly) Yeah. Me, too.
BUFFY: That might be how you get off, but it's not my style.
SPIKE: No, it's your calling! Gave me a run for my money, Slayer. ... Now, I admit it. You've had me by the short hairs. I love you. You know it. But I got my rocks back. You felt something last night.
BUFFY: Not love.
SPIKE: Not yet. But I'm in your system now. You're gonna crave me, like I crave blood. And the next time you come crawling, if you don't stop being such a bitch, maybe I will bite you. (Ep. 6.10, "Wrecked")

BUFFY: (post-coital panting) Uh ... we missed the bed again.
SPIKE: (looks toward the bed) Lucky for the bed.
BUFFY: Is this a new rug?
SPIKE: Mm ... no. Just looks different when you're under it.
(They both chuckle briefly)
BUFFY: (looking around) You know, this place is okay for a hole in the ground. You fixed it up.
SPIKE: Well, I ate a decorator once. Maybe something stuck. (smirks jokingly)
BUFFY: I've been thinking about doing something to my room.
SPIKE: (moving closer to her) Yeah?
BUFFY: Yeah, I think the New Kids On The Block posters are starting to date me.
SPIKE: (chuckles) Well, if you want, I can... (suddenly pauses)
SPIKE: (surprised) Are we having a conversation?
BUFFY: What? No! No. (pause, slight smile) Maybe.
SPIKE: Hmm.
BUFFY: What?
SPIKE: Well, isn't this usually the part where you kick me in the head and run out, virtue fluttering?
Buffy and SpikeBUFFY: That's the plan ... (embarrassed) ... as soon as my legs start working.
(They both chuckle softly for a moment)
SPIKE: (whispers, amazed, stroking her arm gently) You were amazing.
BUFFY: (softly) You got the job done yourself.
SPIKE: I was just trying to keep up. The things you do ... the way you make it hurt in all the wrong places. I've never been with such an animal.
BUFFY: (jerks her arm away, to Spike's surprise) I'm not an animal.
SPIKE: (raises his eyebrows) You wanna see the bite marks?
BUFFY: You know, it's late, I-I should ... get home before Dawn goes to sleep.
SPIKE: And she's off. (Spike falls back in unsurprised defeat, as Buffy begins rummaging around under the rug)
BUFFY: Have you seen my underwear?
SPIKE: (sighs) What is this to you? This thing we have.
BUFFY: We don't have a ... thing, we have ... this. That's all.
SPIKE: (watches her for a moment, then, sounding hurt) Do you even like me?
BUFFY: (pause, then softly, apologetically) Sometimes. (looks away)
SPIKE: But you like what I do to you. (after a pause, Spike reaches behind him and produces a pair of handcuffs. Buffy finally looks at him.)
SPIKE: Do you trust me?
BUFFY: (pause, then softly) Never. (Ep. 6.13, "Dead Things")

FightBUFFY: I have to do this. Just let me go.
SPIKE: I can't. I love you.
BUFFY: No, you don't.
SPIKE: You think I haven't tried not to?
BUFFY: (punches him) Try harder.
SPIKE: You are not throwing your life away over this.
BUFFY: It's not your choice.
SPIKE: Why are you doing this to yourself?
BUFFY: A girl is dead because of me.
SPIKE: And how many people are alive because of you? How many have you saved? One dead girl doesn't tip the scale.
BUFFY: That's all it is to you, isn't it? Just another body!
Spike Beaten UpSPIKE: (sighing) Buffy ... (she attacks him)
BUFFY: You can't understand why this is killing me, can you?
SPIKE: Why don't you explain it? (she keeps hitting)
SPIKE: Come on, that's it, put it on me. Put it all on me. (She kicks him) That's my girl.
BUFFY: (yelling) I am not your girl! (knocks him to the ground and keeps pounding him, while he simply lays there and takes it) You don't ... have a soul! There is nothing good or clean in you! You are dead inside! You can't feel anything real! I could never ... be your girl!
SPIKE: (face swollen, voice slurred) You always hurt ... the one you love, pet. Buffy? (she walks away toward the police station to turn herself in, while Spike tries to roll over to stop her but can't) Buffy ... (Ep. 6.13, "Dead Things")

"Well, that's bloody funny coming from you! No more games? That's all you've ever done is play me. You keep playing with rules you make up as you like. You know what I am. You've always known. You come to me all the same." (Ep. 6.15, "As You Were")

BUFFY: It's over.
SPIKE: (smiles, moves closer to her) I've memorized this tune, luv. Think I have the sheet music. Doesn't change what you want.
BUFFY: I know that. (pauses) I do want you. (Spike looking surprised) Being with you ... makes things ... simpler. For a little while.
SPIKE: I don't call five hours straight a little while.
BUFFY: (interrupts abruptly) I'm using you.
(He stares at her.)
BUFFY: I can't love you. I'm just ... being weak, and selfish ...
SPIKE: (moves even closer, interrupts rather desperately) Really not complaining here.
BUFFY: ... and it's killing me.
(Spike stops, frowns.)
BUFFY: I have to be strong about this.
(He continues staring at her.)
BUFFY: I'm sorry ... William. (Ep. 6.15, "As You Were")

SPIKE: (quietly) Hello, Buffy.
BUFFY: Hey.
SPIKE: It's a happy occasion. You meet my friend?
BUFFY: No. Not yet. But she seems like a very nice attempt at making me jealous.
SPIKE: (small smile) Is it working?
BUFFY: (quietly) A little. It doesn't change anything ... but if you're wildly curious, yeah, it hurts.
SPIKE: (softly) I'm sorry. (remembers himself) Or, good!
(Buffy smiles a little.)
SPIKE: You want us to go?
BUFFY: No. No, I ... you have every right to be here. I pretty much deserve ...
SPIKE: That's not true, you ... (sighs, looks at the ceiling, flexes his jaw as if in pain) God, this is hard.
BUFFY: Yeah.
SPIKE: (sighs) I think we'll go.
BUFFY: Go where? To your place?
SPIKE: (not thrilled) Yeah, I suppose. That was the idea.
BUFFY: Yeah.
SPIKE: (gesturing vaguely to himself) Evil.
BUFFY: Of course.
SPIKE: But I won't. Or I ... (frustrated) I'll just go. Give 'em my best or whatever. The happy couple.
BUFFY: I will.
SPIKE: (quietly) It's nice to watch you be happy. For them, even. I don't see it a lot. You, uh ... you glow.
WeddingBUFFY: (smiles) That's because the dress is radioactive.
(Spike snorts. They share an amused moment.)
BUFFY: I should ...
SPIKE: Yeah.
(She starts to walk past him.)
SPIKE: But it hurts?
(She stops, turns back.)
BUFFY: Yeah.
SPIKE: (quietly) Thanks.
(He turns and walks off. Buffy watches him go.)
BUFFY: (to herself) You're welcome. (Ep. 6.16, "Hell's Bells")

BUFFY: Xander left. The wedding didn't happen.
SPIKE: (surprised) Well. Gotta say ... I didn't see that coming. (sits on a bench)
BUFFY: It was awful. (sits nearby) Anya was devastated.
SPIKE: (dryly) Is that right?
BUFFY: And, Xander ... thinks maybe they can still get back together, but ... he hurt her a lot.
SPIKE: Yeah, well ... some people can't see a good thing when they've got it. (Ep. 6.17, "Normal Again")

"Put a little ice on the back of her neck. ... She likes that." (Ep. 6.17, "Normal Again")

"I hope you don't think this antidote's gonna rid you of that nasty martyrdom. See, I figured it out, love. You can't help yourself. You're not drawn to the dark like I thought. You're addicted to the misery. That's why you won't tell your pals about us. Might actually have to be happy if you did. They'd either understand and help you, God forbid, or drive you out where you could finally be at peace ... in the dark, with me. Either way, you'd be better off for it, but you're too twisted for that. Let yourself live, already. And stop with the bloody hero trip for a second ... we'd all be the better for it. (pause) You either tell your friends about us, or I will." (Ep. 6.17, "Normal Again")

SPIKE: I've tried to make it clear to you, but you won't see it. Something happened to me. The way I feel ... about you ... It's different. No matter how hard you try to convince yourself it isn't ... it's real.
BUFFY: (gently) I think it is. (pause) For you. (pause) I know that's not what you want to hear. I'm sorry. I really am. But, Spike, you have to move on. You have to get over ...
SPIKE: (interrupts softly but intently, deeply wounded) Get out. (Ep. 6.18, "Entropy")

BUFFY: You tried to rape me. I don't have the words.
SPIKE: Neither do I. I can't say "sorry" ... can't use "forgive me" ... all I can say is, Buffy, I've changed.
BUFFY: I believe you.
SPIKE: Well, that's something.
BUFFY: I just don't know what you've changed into. You come back to town ... you make with the big surprises ... twice. I don't know what your game is, Spike, but I know there's something you're not telling me.
SPIKE: You're right. There is. But we're not best friends anymore, so too bad for me. I'm not sharing. We've been through things ... the end of the world and back. I can be useful because, honestly, I've got nothing better to do. Make use of me if you want. (Ep. 7.02, "Beneath You")

BUFFY: (reaching out to touch the cuts on Spike's chest) Tell me what happened to you.
SPIKE: (flinching away from her hand, protectively) Hey! Hey hey! No touching! Am I flesh? Am I flesh to you? Feed on flesh. My flesh. Nothing else. Not a spark. (slight pause, then nodding and trembling) Okay, fine. Flesh, then. Solid through. Get it hard, service the girl. (begins to unbutton his pants obediently)

BUFFY: Stop it! (scuffle, Buffy throws him across the church and into some pews, which shatter beneath him)
SPIKE: Right. Girl doesn't want to be serviced. Because there's no spark. (suddenly, looking around church) Ain't we in a soddin' engine?
BUFFY: Spike, have you completely lost your mind?
SPIKE: Well, YES ... where have you been all night?
BUFFY: You thought you would just come back here and ... be with me?
SPIKE: First time for everything. (brief, dry chuckle)
BUFFY: This is all you get. I'm listening. Tell me what happened.
SPIKE: I tried to find it, of course.
BUFFY: (impatient, cold) Find what?
SPIKE: The spark. The missing ... the piece ... that fit ... that would make me fit. Because you didn't want ... (grimaces in agony and turns away) God, I can't ... not with you looking! (scoots into the shadows, where he stands and paces restlessly in the darkness) I dreamed of killing you. (Buffy picks up a stake and wields it warily) I think they were dreams. So weak. Did you make me weak? Thinking of you ... holding myself ... and spilling useless buckets of salt over your ... ending. Angel ... he should have warned me. He makes a good show of forgetting, but it's here. In me. All the time. The spark. (slowly moving into the light, behind Buffy) I wanted to give you what you deserve. And I got it. They put the spark in me, and now all it does is burn.
BUFFY: (softly, disbelieving) Your soul. (GEEZE ... she FINALLY gets it!)
SPIKE: (laughs briefly, humorlessly) A bit worse for lack of use.
BUFFY: You got your soul back. How? (Is this girl a quick study or what?)
Beneath YouSPIKE: It's what you wanted, right? (looks up, as if toward God) It's what you wanted, right? And ... and now everybody's in here (clutches his head) ... talking. Everything I did ... everyone I ... and Him ... and It ... the Other ... the Thing ... beneath ... beneath you ... it's here, too. Everybody. They all just tell me, "Go." Go. To Hell.
BUFFY: (still gamely struggling with this basic Spike-got-his-soul-back concept) Why? Why would you do that?
SPIKE: (interrupting) Buffy, shame on you. (the rest of this speech is spoken trembling on the edge of tears) Why does a man do what he mustn't? For her. To be hers. To be the kind of man who would never ... To be a kind of man ... (looks at cross on altar, and begins walking toward it) And she shall look on him with forgiveness. And everybody will forgive, and love ... (slight pause) And he will be loved. (pause, then tiredly, softly, weeping subtly) So everything's okay, right? (rests on the cross, begins smoking, leans his face against the arm of the cross) Can we rest now? Buffy ... can we rest? (Ep. 7.02, "Beneath You")

BUFFY: Is there something evil in the school? Down here, maybe. Spike, please, do you know anything?
SPIKE: (sighing and turning away) Yes. (pause) There's evil. (pause) Down here. Right here. I'm a bad man. William is a baaaaad man. I hurt the girl. (pause, then he begins punching himself viciously)
BUFFY: (grabbing Spike's hand) Spike, stop it! What did you do?
SPIKE: I hurt you, Buffy! And I will pay. I am paying because I hurt the girl. (Ep. 7.04, "Help")

SPIKE: (to Buffy) This chip they did to me ... I couldn't help it. But the soul I got on my own ... for you. (Ep. 7.08, "Sleeper")

SPIKE: I have come to redefine the words "pain" and "suffering" since I fell in love with you.
BUFFY: How can you say that?
SPIKE: Apparently I just slaughtered half of Sunnydale, pet. I'm not really worried about being polite anymore.
BUFFY: So that's what this is about. You're feeling sorry for yourself, Spike?
SPIKE: I'm feeling honest with myself. You used me.
BUFFY: (grimly) Yes.
SPIKE: You told me that, of course. I never understood it, though. Not 'til now. You hated yourself ... and you took it out on me.
BUFFY: (sarcastic) You figure that out just now?
SPIKE: Soul's not all about moonbeams and penny whistles, love. It's about self-loathing. I get it. Had to travel 'round the world, but ... I understand you now. I understand the violence inside.
BUFFY: (sarcastic) Violence. William the Bloody now has insight into violence.
SPIKE: Not the same. As bad as I was, as evil and as wretched as I was, I never truly hated myself back then. Not like I do now. (Ep. 7.09, "Never Leave Me")

SPIKE: Have you ever really asked yourself why you can't do it ... off me ... after everything I've done ... to you ... to the people around you? (pause) It's not love ... we both know that.
BUFFY: You fought by my side. You've saved lives, you've helped ...
SPIKE: (interrupts impatiently) Don't do that. Don't rationalize this into some noble act. We both know the truth of it. (he turns his face away with a grimace and pauses) You like men who hurt you.
BUFFY: No.
SPIKE: (looks back at Buffy) You need the pain we cause you. You need the hate. You need it to do your job, to be the Slayer ...
BUFFY: (interrupts) No! I don't hate like that ... not you, or myself ... not anymore. You think you have insight now because your soul's drenched in blood? You don't know me! You don't even know you! Was that you who killed those people in the cellar? Was that you who waited for those girls?
SPIKE: There's no one else.
BUFFY: That's not true! Listen to me. You're not alive because of hate ... or pain. You're alive because I saw you change. Because I saw your penance.
SPIKE: (lunges toward Buffy within his chains) Window dressing!
BUFFY: (walking toward Spike) Be easier, wouldn't it, if it were an act? But it's not. You faced the monster inside of you and you fought back. You risked everything to be a better man ...
SPIKE: (interrupts desperately) Buffy ...
BUFFY: (interrupts firmly) ... and you can be. You are. You may not see it, but I do. I do. (pause as they stare intently at each other) I believe in you, Spike. (Ep. 7.09, "Never Leave Me")
