Prayer of St. Francis
by Sarah McLachlan
Context: Ep. 6.22, "Grave": This song plays at the end of the episode. I interpret it as perhaps a summary of the lessons that should have been learned over the course of Season 6 ... by all of the characters, including Buffy and Spike. In fact, looking closely at the lyrics, I think I'd have to say that I think Spike was mostly doing these things already ... loving Buffy despite her hatred of him, forgiving her every blow she dealt him, believing in her even when she doubted herself, making her smile when she was down, consoling her and never asking for anything in return, and trying to understand how she was feeling, even when no one else was (as in "After Life").
Lord make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred let me sow love.
Where there is injury, pardon.
Where there is doubt, faith.
Where there is despair, hope.
Where there is darkness, light.
And where there is sadness, joy.
O divine master grant that I may
not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
To be loved as to love
For it is in giving that we receive--
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned.
And it's in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen
