My All-Time Top 5 Spike/Buffy Moments

When Buffy went to Spike's crypt later in "After Life," to escape the pressure everyone else was putting on her, and he rather nervously sat and talked to her — haltingly, and with obvious pain — about his dreams of saving her ... every night since she'd died. Spike's apparent anguish in this scene always makes my heart hurt. |

All the longing looks Buffy keeps sending Spike's way throughout "Once More With Feeling," but especially the moment when Spike saves her from dancing herself into spontaneous combustion. He touches her hair so sweetly, so lovingly ... and Buffy gazes at him so intensely. Both of their facial expressions and the completeness with which the rest of the world seems to cease to exist for them both until Sweet claps his hands seem very romantic. Not to mention the fact that Spike saved her life while everyone else just stood around watching. My hero! |

When Spike first saw Buffy after her resurrection, in "After Life." He held her injured hands and was gentle to her while everyone else was busy freaking out and being selfish. She asked him how long she'd been gone, and he told her, "147 days yesterday, 148 today. But today doesn't count, does it?" and gave her this sort of awkward little smile. He quietly asked her how long it had been for her, and she told him it had been much longer ... opening up more than she had to anyone else yet at that point. Spike seemed to understand her, be connected with her, more than ever before. I love the tenderness and kindness in this scene, and always find it touching.
The scene at Buffy's house during "The Gift," when Buffy invites Spike back in for the first time since "Crush." Spike's embarrassed request that she simply hand the weapons over the threshold, and Buffy's quiet and unexpected acceptance of him when she simply invites him in, both always touch me. And then, of course, she asks him to protect Dawn, and he promises that he will, and tells her that he appreciates that she has treated him like a man instead of a monster. Spike's quiet, defeated acceptance that his love is unrequited and Buffy's quiet, unspoken acceptance of his feelings in this scene almost always make me tear up. So much emotion is right beneath the surface.
Okay, okay, okay. The final scene in "Smashed." That has to be somewhere on any true S/B 'shipper's list, right? What I especially like about this scene, though, is Spike's facial expression when Buffy climbs on top of him. He looks so awed, so shocked, so disbelieving. He looks like his dreams are coming true. Too bad it turned out the way it did ... but I'll just enjoy the moment. I hate to end with only five, but ... there you have it!
